What do the County's municipal cemeteries offer?

Prince Edward County maintains several active cemeteries where plots can still be bought: Mountain View and Salem in Ameliasburgh; the Hicksite, Quaker and Universalist cemeteries in Bloomfield; Bowerman McFaul in Hillier; Rose Cemetery in North Marysburgh; and Sophiasburgh Cemetery. Its many pioneer cemeteries no longer sell plots.

The County names Glenwood Cemetery as the head office for all of its active municipal cemeteries: for plots, niches and burials, call 613-476-3511 or write to info@glenwoodcemetery.ca. Sophiasburgh Cemetery, at 504 County Road 15 in Demorestville, has a columbarium whose 48 niches each hold two urns and a few small keepsakes, with names and dates engraved on a bronze plaque.

Can you scatter ashes in Prince Edward County?

Yes, where the rules allow it. Ontario permits scattering on unoccupied Crown land, including land covered by water, where no sign prohibits it; the Province gives provincial parks and the Great Lakes as examples. You may also scatter on private land, such as a family property, with the owner's consent, and the owner cannot charge a fee unless licensed as a cemetery operator. For County-owned land, check with the County first. If you're unsure whether a shoreline is Crown land, the Bereavement Authority of Ontario points families to the Province's Crown land information.

Where can you hold a celebration of life in the County?

The County rents out its town halls in Picton, Bloomfield, Wellington, Ameliasburgh, Athol, Hillier, North Marysburgh and Sophiasburgh. To check availability, call 613-476-2148 ext. 5003 or email bookings@pecounty.on.ca. Once a date is confirmed, you return the rental agreement with a damage deposit, paid online or in person at 111 Belleville Street in Wellington or at Shire Hall, 332 Picton Main Street. The South Marysburgh Town Hall and the Mount Tabor Playhouse in Milford are booked through the South Marysburgh Facilities Association instead.

County parks can also be booked for a private gathering, through the same contacts. Bookings are first come, first served, and are final only once the County has your completed forms and payment.

Who issues burial permits in the County?

The County Clerk's Office. In Ontario, a death is registered with the municipality, usually the one where it happened, by the funeral director, and a burial permit can only be issued once it is registered. Until after the 2026 municipal election, the Clerk's Office works from Wellington Town Hall, 246 Main Street, Wellington, by appointment only (613-476-2148 ext. 1020). It is due back at Shire Hall in November 2026.

When is a celebrant a good fit?

When you want a ceremony that feels like the person, wherever it takes place. A celebrant from our local network comes to the place you choose in the County, whether a funeral home, cemetery, park, hall or home, and writes the ceremony around the person's life, religious or not. With Celebrance, the price is shown upfront, all-in, and if the celebrant becomes unavailable, we find a replacement.
