Who runs the cemeteries in Muskoka?
In Muskoka's three towns, the town itself operates the municipal cemeteries. The District of Muskoka is made up of six area municipalities: Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Georgian Bay, Lake of Bays and Muskoka Lakes. Here is what the towns publish:
- Huntsville is a licensed cemetery operator with five active cemeteries. Hutcheson Memorial has graves and columbarium niches, and Madill and St. Michael's also has niches. Interments take place Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A cremation interment costs $372 plus HST in 2026, and a Saturday or after-hours surcharge applies. The cemetery operations coordinator can be reached at 705-789-1751, ext. 2404.
- Bracebridge operates 19 cemeteries, open daily from dawn to dusk between late spring and late fall. Interments take place Monday to Friday with 48 hours' notice, and weekends or holidays cost extra. The columbarium is at the Bracebridge Municipal Cemetery, 19 Lilac Lane. For information, call Corporate Services at 705-645-5264.
- Gravenhurst operates 13 cemeteries, including Mickle Memorial at 124 Lofty Pines Drive. To buy a lot or schedule an interment, email publicworks@gravenhurst.ca.
Ontario requires a burial permit before any burial or cremation. The permit is issued when the death is registered, usually with the municipality where it happened, and the funeral director normally handles this step. If you are planning a graveside ceremony, confirm the interment time with the town first.
Can you scatter ashes in Muskoka?
Yes, within the provincial rules, but not in Bracebridge's cemeteries, where the Town does not allow scattering. In Gravenhurst, a designated section of Lakeview Cemetery is set aside for scattering. Ontario allows scattering on private land with the owner's consent and on unoccupied Crown land, including land covered by water, where no sign prohibits it. It also allows scattering on municipal land where no by-law forbids it. A private landowner cannot charge you a fee unless they are a licensed cemetery operator. Before you scatter ashes on town land, ask the town concerned.
Where can you hold a celebration of life in Muskoka?
The Town of Huntsville says it offers numerous venues for a celebration of life, indoors and outdoors. Requests go through its Facility Rental Request Form, and Town Hall is at 37 Main Street East (705-789-1751). In Bracebridge, the rustic chalet in James W. Kerr Park, 130 Beaumont Drive, can be rented from April 15 to October 15. It has tables and chairs, a fireplace, a small kitchen and accessible washrooms, with a patio and picnic tables outside. The Muskoka Leon's Auditorium at the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre can also be booked. Bracebridge bookings are handled at 705-645-3037, ext. 3763.
When is a celebrant a good fit?
A celebrant is a good fit when you want a ceremony that speaks about the person, religious or not. A celebrant from our local network comes to the place you choose, whether that is a funeral home, a cemetery, a park, a hall or your home. They write the ceremony around the person's life. With Celebrance, the price is shown upfront, all-in, and if the celebrant becomes unavailable, Celebrance finds a replacement.
