Where can you hold a celebration of life in Kitchener?
Besides a funeral home or your own home, Kitchener has a City-run space made for these gatherings: the Dedication Centre at Williamsburg Cemetery, 1541 Fischer-Hallman Road. It holds up to 75 guests and is used for celebrations of life, memorial services and time together before or after a burial. It is available Monday to Saturday, generally from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and cannot be booked after dark, so availability varies with the season. In 2026, a service of remembrance costs $584 for up to three hours, room set-up included, plus HST.
For a larger group, the Victoria Park Pavilion downtown holds up to 250 people. Start with the City's online rental inquiry form; hourly bookings have a minimum of three to six hours, depending on the day, plus staff costs.
Can you have a graveside service in a Kitchener cemetery?
Yes. The City of Kitchener runs several cemeteries, including Williamsburg and Woodland, and its staff give families time for a service and reflection before a grave is closed. To bury ashes, call Kitchener Cemeteries at 519-741-2880 at least 48 hours ahead. Burials take place Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The City's guide says that if you want clergy, a funeral director or a funeral celebrant at the graveside, you book them yourself before the date. Bring the certificate of cremation with you.
Before any burial or cremation, the death must be registered. In Kitchener, the funeral home brings the documents to the City clerk's office, which issues the burial permit.
Can you scatter ashes in Kitchener?
Yes, within limits. Ontario allows scattering on unoccupied Crown land, including land covered by water, where no sign prohibits it, and on private land with the owner's consent. On municipal land, the province asks you to check local by-laws first. In Kitchener, the City offers scattering gardens at Williamsburg and Woodland cemeteries, open for scattering from about June 1 to November 1. The 2026 fee is $324, and a signed permission letter is needed beforehand. A bronze name plaque can be added to the boulder beside the Williamsburg garden.
How can you create a memorial in Kitchener?
Kitchener Cemeteries offers stone memorial benches and memorial trees, each with a bronze plaque, as well as small plaques on the Butterfly wall inside the Dedication Centre. For City parks, Council approved a tree and bench dedication program in 2025, and the City says more information will be available in late 2026.
When is a celebrant a good fit?
A celebrant is a good fit when you want a ceremony built around the person, wherever it takes place. A celebrant from our local network comes to the place you choose in Kitchener, whether a funeral home, cemetery, park, hall or home, and writes the ceremony around the person's life, religious or not. With Celebrance, the price is shown upfront, all-in, and if the celebrant becomes unavailable, we find a replacement.
