How do you register a death in Guelph?

In Guelph, a death is registered at City Hall, 1 Carden Street, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, and the fee is $45. A funeral director usually handles this, but the City notes that a family member can also register the death without a funeral service provider. Two documents are needed: the Medical Certificate of Death, completed by the doctor or coroner, and the Statement of Death, completed by the funeral director and an informant, usually a family member. A burial permit, required for a burial or a cremation, can only be issued once the death is registered. Outside City Hall hours, permits are released at the Fire Hall, 50 Wyndham Street South; call 519-824-3232 before you go.

Where can you hold a celebration of life in Guelph?

The City rents community rooms at the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre, the Victoria Road Recreation Centre and the West End Community Centre. If the ceremony includes smudging, the City lists rooms that are smudge ready: the Cedar Room at Victoria Road, the Lions Lair and Community Room #2 at West End, and Room 4 at Evergreen.

Outdoors, from May 1 to October 12, 2026, you can book one of two picnic shelters at Riverside Park, with 16 and 21 tables, or the shelter at the Guelph Lake sports fields, for a half day or a full day. Amplified sound at the Riverside shelters needs special permission, as they sit next to the park's enabling garden. The Facility Booking team answers at 519-837-5678, option 1.

Can you scatter ashes in Guelph?

Yes, within the provincial rules. In Ontario, ashes may be scattered on unoccupied Crown land, including land covered by water, such as a provincial park or the Great Lakes, where no signs or postings prohibit it, and on private property with the owner's consent. On municipal land, local by-laws apply, so check with the City before scattering in a Guelph park. In Guelph, Woodlawn Memorial Park, along with the Woodlawn Crematorium and Mausoleum, is overseen by the Guelph Cemetery Commission, a commission under the City's purview. Ask Woodlawn directly about its own options.

How can you honour someone in a Guelph park?

The City's commemorative tree program has been discontinued, but benches can still be dedicated to a loved one in a City park, trail or greenspace. All benches are steel, a limited number are installed each year, in spring or fall, and requests are approved first come, first served. Each bench costs $4,915.50 ($4,350 plus HST).

When is a celebrant a good fit?

A celebrant is a good fit when you want a ceremony built around the person, wherever it takes place. A celebrant from our local network comes to the place you choose in Guelph, whether a funeral home, cemetery, park, hall or home, and writes the ceremony around the person's life, religious or not. With Celebrance, the price is shown upfront, all-in, and if the celebrant becomes unavailable, we find a replacement.
