Where do you get a marriage licence in Stratford?

Stratford issues marriage licences at the Clerk's Office, City Hall, 1 Wellington Street, by appointment only. After you book, the City emails you a link to its online application form: complete it within 7 days, or you may lose the appointment. Note that no licence appointments are booked on Mondays or weekends.

The fee is $125, paid at the appointment by Interac, cash, credit card or money order. Licences aren't refunded: if yours expires, you buy a new one. An Ontario licence is valid for 3 months from the day it is issued, so book with your date in mind.

Can you get married at Stratford City Hall?

Yes, by appointment, in the Council Chambers at City Hall (accessible by elevator). The City Clerk or a designate conducts the ceremony during business hours, never on Mondays or weekends. The fee is $339 ($300 plus HST), and the City can provide your 2 legally required witnesses for $25 each. Your booking is confirmed once the Clerk's Office receives the Civil Ceremony Package and the fee. Cancelling within a week of the date costs $56.50.

When is a private officiant a better fit?

Many couples choose Stratford for its theatre-town charm, riverside parks and heritage venues, often on a Saturday. Since City ceremonies don't run on weekends, a private officiant is the way to marry on a Saturday or at your own venue, with a ceremony written around your story. With Celebrance, the price is shown upfront, all-in, and if your officiant can't make it, we send a replacement at no cost.

Stratford is part of our Kitchener-Waterloo zone, and local officiants travel here from across the region.

How far ahead should you plan?

Book your officiant as soon as your date is set, then book your licence appointment within the 3 months before the wedding, remembering the 7-day deadline for the online form. Our marriage licence planner gives you the exact dates.

Information checked on September 24, 2026 against the City of Stratford's official pages. Fees and hours can change: confirm with the Clerk's Office before your appointment.
