Where do you get a marriage licence in Peterborough?

Peterborough issues marriage licences at the Clerk's Office, City Hall, 500 George Street North, by appointment, Monday to Friday, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m. Fill in the City's online application form, print it, and both sign it by hand. Then email photos of your ID to marriage@peterborough.ca before the appointment, which you book by phone at 705-742-7777 ext. 1820. Only one of you needs to attend.

The fee is $150, non-refundable. Licences are issued in person only: they can't be mailed, faxed or emailed. The Clerk's Office doesn't provide interpreters, so bring your own if you need one. The licence is valid for 3 months from the day it is issued.

Can you get married at Peterborough City Hall?

The City holds non-religious civil ceremonies in Council Chambers on a handful of listed Fridays: in 2026, July 10 and 24, August 14 and 28, September 11 and December 11. All 2026 ceremony spots were booked when we checked. The fee is $360 plus HST, paid when booking, for up to 10 guests (2 witnesses plus 8 others), and the ceremony takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Peterborough and the Kawarthas, with your own officiant

With only a few City dates a year, most couples in Peterborough marry with a private officiant: at a lakeside cottage in the Kawarthas, a local venue, a park or at home, any day of the week, with the guests and the ceremony they want. With Celebrance, the price is shown upfront, all-in, and if your officiant can't make it on the day, we send a replacement at no cost.

Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes form one zone for us, so the same local officiants cover both.

How far ahead should you plan?

Book your officiant as soon as your date is set, then book your licence appointment within the 3 months before the wedding. Our marriage licence planner gives you the exact dates.

Information checked on September 24, 2026 against the City of Peterborough's official page. Fees and dates change: confirm with the Clerk's Office before you book.
