How do you get a marriage licence in Ottawa?
In Ottawa, you start with the City's online marriage licence application request form. If it is approved, you receive a confirmation email with the next steps for getting your licence at a City of Ottawa Client Service Centre. Only one of you needs to be there, with 2 pieces of ID for yourself and 2 for your partner.
The City's fee is $192.14 in 2026 (HST exempt), payable by cash, cheque, Interac or credit card, and it is non-refundable. The licence is valid for 90 days from the day it is issued and can be used anywhere in Ontario. There are no residency or citizenship requirements.
One thing to know if you are planning a symbolic ceremony abroad first: the City notes that under provincial law, a licence cannot be issued once a ceremony has already taken place. Get legally married in Ontario before, not after, a symbolic or destination ceremony.
Can you get married at Ottawa City Hall?
Yes. The City holds civil ceremonies at Ottawa City Hall (110 Laurier Avenue West), in Orléans (255 Centrum Boulevard) and at Ben Franklin Place in Nepean (101 Centrepointe Drive). They last about 20 minutes, and only 10 people can be in the room: the officiant, the two of you, 2 witnesses and up to 5 guests. You book in person at a Client Service Centre.
The 2026 fee is $168 plus HST on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and $252 plus HST on Fridays at 5 or 6 p.m. and on Saturdays. Ceremonies are in English or French, but bilingual ceremonies are not offered, and City officiants don't travel to private venues.
A ceremony in your language, at your own venue
Many Ottawa families are bilingual, or mix languages. A private officiant marries you at your venue, with as many guests as you like. On Celebrance, the booking form offers the languages our local officiants speak, and a bilingual ceremony when enough of them perform one to guarantee a replacement. The price is shown upfront, all-in, and if your officiant can't make it on the day, we send a replacement at no cost.
How far ahead should you plan?
Book your officiant as soon as your date is set, then apply for your licence within the 90 days before the wedding. Our marriage licence planner gives you the exact dates.
Information checked on September 24, 2026 against the City of Ottawa's official pages. Fees and services can change: confirm with the City (3-1-1) before your appointment.
